Love What Matters isn’t just a phrase—it’s a life-changing perspective. What makes something truly matter to someone? The answer is simple: YOU. You are the value that brings meaning to something else. I am the one who brings value to what matters. God notices even the smallest details of our lives, the moments we may think are insignificant, and He cares deeply about them.
When I was asked to participate in an article, I was honestly shocked. I didn’t consider myself someone with a “cause” or a mission worth highlighting—at least, not at first glance. But the truth is, I have always called attention to the things that matter to me, the issues and ideas that have awakened my heart. And yes, I do have a calling and purpose in this life, even if it isn’t the one society expects.

I have been spared from experiencing certain hardships I read about, but that doesn’t mean they don’t touch me or change me. God’s mercy and guidance have led me to the places that break His heart, and He has given me a life that can bring hope, healing, and encouragement to others. As a woman, bride, mother, sister, homeschool mom, professional photographer, cosmetologist, writer, and friend, I try to point to the things that have strengthened me, hoping they can become a strength for someone else.
One of the greatest joys of my life has been homeschooling my children. After raising two graduates, I returned to homeschooling with my third child, despite a 16-year gap between my middle and youngest. People might assume that having a baby at 44 means my teaching days are over—but they’re not. I will continue this journey until my final days. Even with just one child at home now, I’ve rediscovered old passions and embraced new ones in the spaces I carve for myself.

Recently, I made a bold choice: I let my hair go gray. Some might see it as expected or inevitable, but for me, it was an act of self-love and freedom. My age is mine, and what others think about me doesn’t matter. With my cosmetology background, I approached going gray intentionally, and in doing so, I’ve found God’s guidance in the process. He has given me a heart to encourage other women—through honest advice, practical encouragement, and a boost of confidence—to embrace their own decisions about aging and beauty.

Going gray isn’t always glamorous. It takes effort, courage, and a willingness to see yourself differently, without fear or hesitation. Choosing this path is a gentle rebellion against the beauty industry and society’s obsession with youth. But youth isn’t a number—it’s a mindset. For me, it isn’t about clinging to the past; it’s about embracing the life God has given me, living fully in the present, and aging with grace and grit.

This journey has been liberating. It has taught me to love myself as I am, to stop yearning for how I looked in the past, and to see beauty in authenticity. Gray hair is often described as a “lack of color,” but I’ve found it’s the opposite—it’s an invitation to create, to express yourself, and to become your own work of art. It inspired me to start an Instagram account to share my experiences as a “photo writer,” connect with like-minded women, and celebrate a community of shared wisdom and encouragement.
Through this platform, I’ve combined my love of writing, photography, and mentoring. I share humor, encouragement, homeschool devotionals, curriculum reviews, and reflections on seeing God in the everyday messiness of life. Homeschooling through hot flashes, embracing gray hair, and navigating midlife has been a journey I never expected—but it’s one I approach with grace, determination, and even a little sass.

I’ve learned that knowledge is power. Having spent years both behind and in the salon chair, I know how to advocate for myself, cut my own hair, and experiment with what works best for me. More importantly, I want to share these lessons to empower other women. Going silver is a bold commitment in a world that equates hair color with youth. But ultimately, it’s a choice to see yourself on your own terms—not through someone else’s lens.

Here are a few tips I’ve gathered along the way, with faith and a little sass:
- Find a Stylist Who Supports You – They exist, and they make all the difference.
- Experiment with New Cuts and Styles – It takes commitment and courage, but the rewards are worth it.
- Enjoy the Transition – Resist highlights or chemicals; embracing the process builds mental and physical strength.
- Don’t React to Criticism – Use comments as reinforcement and find your community: #SilverSisters #GreyGraceAndGrit #TangledSilverSis
- Learn Your Own Hair – Purple shampoo and personal research are your best friends; comparisons are traps.
- Journal Your Journey – This isn’t just about hair; it’s about self-discovery, confidence, and freedom.
- Care for Your Skin – A vibrant, healthy glow completes your transformation and enhances your confidence.
Going gray has been more than a cosmetic choice—it’s been a revelation. It has challenged me to embrace life, cultivate resilience, and celebrate authenticity. Gray hair is not a loss—it’s an opportunity to see yourself clearly, fully, and beautifully, and to share that vision with others.
